Emily Nonko, chair of the Operations Committee (known as “Ops”), plays an instrumental role in keeping Greene Hill Food Co-op running in non-pandemic times—and especially now.

This month we’re spotlighting Thaisa Lemos from the Shifts Committee, who’s been on our front line of scheduling this past month.

This month, get to know Robert Eshelman-Håkansson, who recently became the managing editor of content at Greene Hill Food Co-op. He’s a professional writer and editor and adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

This month we chatted with one of our website content writers, Christopher Lee Kennedy. He’s a designer and educator based here in Brooklyn. 

This fall, we welcomed Calixte Kabwa to the Co-op’s board of directors. An original member of the buying club that preceded the Co-op, Calixte has a lot of experience to share as we grow into our new space.

This month we interviewed Ray Jowdy, one of our new board members. He joined the Co-op at our 2018 fundraiser for the new space and has been helping us grow ever since!

Shaina Garfield lends her design skills to the Co-op, helping our members find their way through the store by creating signs and visual assets for our space. She also moonlights as a cashier, in addition to her work with our Marketing and Wayfinding committees. Sustainability is at the core of her work here and in her career, where she’s designing sustainable burials and rethinking end-of-life rituals.

Q: When did you join the Co-op and what were some of your reasons for wanting to get involved?

Our Inventory Operations Manager (and former General Manager) Willa’s passions for nature, social justice, and cooperatives are just a few things that led her on the path to our Co-op community. We’re so glad to have Willa as part of the Greene Hill Co-op family.

If you shop with us regularly, chances are you’ve met August, one of our two interim general managers. In our interview, we asked him about how he became interested in food co-ops like ours, and we learned about his community organizing work with our neighbors a few miles east on Fulton Street.

Intrigued by the flavors, functional properties and the sheer vibrancy of the tea blends, I spoke with Elisabeth about the work she and her partner, Casey Spacht, do.
