Greene Hill Member-funded SNAP Relief Gift Cards Take Off

In less than two weeks after rolling out our SNAP gift card fund, we’re thrilled to announce that Greene Hill has already collected over $1,300 in contributions. The fund—created to help Greene Hill members impacted by the Trump administration’s cuts to SNAP funding during the government shutdown—was created to provide $50 Co-op gift cards to member-owners facing difficulty purchasing food. The total amount (so far!) reflects generous donations from Co-op members, as well as an initial allocation of store funds to help get the ball rolling.

“I feel like everyone’s been really excited and proactive on donating,” says Greene Hill General Manager Phoebe Clement. “I’ve seen donations of every dollar amount.”

The initiative—which Clement has helped to spearhead in the two weeks since it was first pitched to the Greene Hill board and staff—feels like a natural extension of Greene Hill’s mission, she feels. “One part of our co-op’s core principles is to be accessible and have access to fresh food,” says Clement. As a community of over 400 people, the Co-op is also uniquely positioned to support those members hurting as a result of the funding cuts, she says.

Clement says that they’ve already distributed over two dozen gift cards, and are currently in the process of sending out a second round to folks who have already spent their first $50. While New York State has begun issuing full benefits to eligible New Yorkers, Greene Hill is still accepting requests for the fund’s gift cards—inquire in the store or look through The Weekly newsletter for the link.

Should the fund exceed demand, funds will be donated to local food justice organizations, like Classon Community Fridge,One Love Community Fridge, and others. If you’d like to donate to the fund, it’s as easy as topping up your purchase at the register next time you shop.
